Entrepreneur Series: Your Portfolio

In the last Entrepreneur Series post "Working as Freelance" we explored the question, do you have what it takes. We discussed the importance of communication, selling your vision, the world of business, and experience. That was just to get you into the entrepreneur mindset. Now I will start covering the important variables of becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Now that we reviewed the last post, we are going to talk about your portfolio in this one. We are going to cover 5 things your portfolio should have. This is important because it shapes your business, credibility, and a ton of other things. Quickly I will overview what we will be discussing that your portfolio should;
  1. Be Professional
  2. Showcase Your Work
  3. Be Put Together
  4. Treated as a Business
  5. Be Online and in Hardcopy

Be Professional
It all starts with having a professional portfolio. This will help attract potential clients, sponsors, and a whole list of supporters for your business.

Showcase Your Work
I put it to you this way showcasing your portfolio lets your work do the talking for you. It’s your credibility and proof of professionalism. It would also give your potential clients the confidence to want your service.

Be Put Together
Besides showcasing your work, it’s also important that you select projects for your portfolio that showcase the kind of work you want to obtain. There should be a clear focus and direction in your portfolio. There should be a consistent theme, whether it’s the type of client, the industry or the type of work.

For example, if you want to work with small businesses, don’t show elite brands. If you want to do websites for the medical industry, don’t have examples of a apparel or retail site.

Treated as a Business
As important as it is to build your portfolio, it’s not everything: Make sure you are consistently building up your reputation. You can build your reputation much faster and easier if you build it on multiple fronts such as client work, speaking engagements, contributions to your community, or local organizations, and etc.”

Be Online and Hardcopy

If it’s in a hardcopy book, don’t use projects that you are unhappy with. In other words if you know it was not your best, don't put it on there. A portfolio must showcase both your creativity and dependability. “An online portfolio is a must for designers who want to take their careers to new levels. From it, clients can have a better view of your advantage over other freelancers.”

If it’s online, try and have your own website. If you are resourceful and know the use of coding html I recommend using Namecheap as a host for your domain and website. Unfortunately some of us don't quite have to time to learn coding a whole new website so for this I recommend sites such as BehanceDribble and Issuu. This is just a small list of useful sites. Some you may already be using such as Facebook. Need some inspiration come over and check out my website @ inspire-image.com.

While it’s important to promote yourself on community websites, you must build a wider web presence, because your work is being hosted among competitors when it’s on sites such as Behance or Dribble. The biggest promotional tool a freelance designer can have is st a unique personal URL that showcases your talent, skill, personality, and creative vision. It’s your ‘business card’ for prospective clients.” –Shane Mielke

Be sure to research and explore some examples of online portfolios, and don't hesitate to join the conversation and ask me questions about some of the resources I used. Knowledge is endless and I'm more than willing to share information among my fellow entrepreneurs.
